Find the Perfect Ring for your Perfect Man!

Ladies, when you are shopping for the perfect wedding ring for your guy, you should consider a few things. Aside from his jewelry preferences, here are a few things that you may want to consider:

Would you want your rings to coordinate?  While it is not necessary for your rings to match you may want the style of the rings to compliment each other.  While the woman’s engagement ring may have diamonds many men’s rings are very simple.

Does your fiancé wear other jewelry?  If so would he like the metals to match?  Often times men like their watches to match the metal of their wedding band.

Does he like gold, platinum, titanium, diamonds, gemstones, or a simple style?

Many men choose a plain wedding band, but men’s wedding bands with diamonds and gemstones are also very popular. Simple men’s wedding bands with one small diamond are perfect if you want just a hint of sparkle while wedding bands with colorful gemstones in a pave setting add plenty of bling to your daily look. Men’s channel wedding bands feature a row of inlaid diamonds; these wedding bands are popular because many women choose channel-set diamonds for their wedding band and some couples choose to have matching wedding rings.

Men’s wedding rings are crafted from a variety of metals. Wedding ring bands made from precious metals, such as gold, sterling silver and platinum, are popular for their high level of shine and traditional appearance. Industrial metals, such as titanium, stainless steel and tungsten, are very durable and offer a masculine look. Gold and platinum men’s rings are generally more expensive than sterling silver, titanium, stainless steel and tungsten, with sterling silver and stainless steel being among the most affordable men’s wedding band options.

Is he allergic to gold? Platinum, titanium, stainless steel and tungsten are hypoallergenic, which makes them good choices for men with allergies or sensitive skin.

The staff at McCaskill & Company will be happy to help you choose the Perfect Ring for the Perfect Man!  We are honored to represent bands by Kwiat, Benchmark, Samuel Jewels, Alex Sepkus, Oscar Heyman, JFA, David Yurman, and  Konstantino.  Drop by Monday through Saturday between 10:00 and 5:30.

DECEMBER BIRTHSTONES

There are actually thirteen different stones listed as birthstone for December!   Included are turquoise, blue topaz, tanzanite, zircon, lapis, onyx, amethyst, ruby and chrysoprase.  In the U.S. today we generally recognizes tanzanite, turquoise and blue topaz.  All three are very different form the on other, but have one thing in common – the unique blue color that makes them perfect for many kinds of fashionable and creative jewelry.

Blue Topaz

The most recognizable birthstone for December is blue topaz, a variation of the common gem, topaz.  Topaz becomes blue when it is heated, either naturally or artificially.  The heating process results in three shades of blue that varies in intensity.  The more intense the blue, the more valuable, although the deepest shade, London Blue, is not produced in nature and is always enhanced.  It is believed by some that the wearer of this birthstone gains a pleasant disposition and patient attitude.  Blue topaz is also a symbol of fidelity and love, and has been said to cure a variety of diseases.

Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the earliest known stones to be used in jewelry and found in tombs dating back as early as 5500 B.C. The rulers of ancient Egypt treasured the turquoise.  In fact, the iconic burial mask of King Tut is inlaid with turquoise,

among other gems. Long before it was denoted as the birthstone of December, turquoise was treasured by the Indian, Chinese, Aztecs, Persians, and Mesopotamians. Native Americans have been using the gemstone to create jewelry and ornamental pieces for the past several thousand years. In recent years it has become an extremely popular choice for designer fashion jewelry as cabochons and the rough stone.  Turquoise is considered by some to be a symbol of success and good fortune. Found in weathered igneous rock that contains copper minerals, the turquoise crystallizes in veins and nodules.  A sky blue shade in turquoise is due to the presence of copper, while a more greenish color is the result of the presence of more iron.  The most valuable turquoise is the intense sky blue color – like the color of a robin’s egg.

Tanzanite

In October 2002, Tanzanite was added to the official birthstone list by the American Gem Trade Association as an additional birthstone for December.  This blue-lavender stone primarily mined in foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, deep in the

heart of Tanzania was discovered only in 1967 and has since been associated with the virtues of contentment and understanding.  Tanzanite has a unique attribute called trichroism – which means that it can appear deep blue, violet or burgundy depending on the orientation of the crystal structure and the cutting of the stone.  You may be surprised that when mined, tanzanite is usually a deep red and once it is heated to 600 degrees, it gradually transforms into a violet blue.  The incredible sparkle and intense color make tanzanite one of our favorite gems for McCaskill & Company jewelry.

Keep your jewels sparkling!

DIAMONDS

Nothing sparkles like a diamond!  To get that sparkle back in your diamond jewelry, we suggest soaking your diamonds for 20 minutes in a 1:2 ratio of warm water and lemon ammonia.  Remove after 20 minutes and gently scrub the diamond and prongs with a very soft-bristle toothbrush.  Rinse with warm water and lay on a towel to dry.

GEMSTONES

Every color stone has its unique colors and qualities, and therefore, cleaning and care is different for each one. A good reference is the Moh’s Scale of Hardness, which measures durability of materials with 10 (diamonds) being the hardest. In some cases, the more durable a stone is, the less likely they are to become damaged in daily activity or regular cleaning. Most colored  gemstones can be cleansed in soapy water, but special care is required for certain stones.  Do wipe your precious gemstone jewelry thoroughly with a clean, soft, damp cloth after wearing. This will enhance the patina and assure that your jewelry is clean before being stored.

PEARLS

Cultured pearls are especially soft and vulnerable. When getting dressed, your cultured pearls should be the last item you put on and the first item you take off. Makeup, hair spray, perfume and other chemicals are very harmful to cultured pearls. It’s a good idea to wipe them with a clean, damp cloth after each use to remove build-up, dirt and oil.  Hot water, steam, extreme temperatures and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided as well.

SILVER

Silver should not come into contact with harsh household chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, or chlorine. To avoid scratches, store silver in a lined jewelry box or pouch, as it is prone to tarnish as it naturally reacts with sulfur or hydrogen sulfide in the air. Cleaning and wearing silver jewelry regularly will prevent this and help maintain its shine. Immediately upon noticing any discoloration, use a gentle polish made specifically for removing tarnish.

GOLD

To keep your gold jewelry looking vibrant, we recommend using a mild detergent and a soft cloth.  Soak your gold in a mild detergent for 10-15 minutes and then gently scrub it with a soft brush.  Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly with a soft polishing cloth.

Men love jewerly too!

Konstantino Gents onyx collection

For Father’s Day, you may want to consider giving jewerly. It is not just today’s guy that wants to look stylish and sophisticated. Men’s jewelry dates back all the way to the Stone Age.  In South Africa, there was evidence found of jewelry made from mollusks that dated back to 100,000 years ago. Other materials like teeth, shells, wood and bone were fashioned into adornments. Most often, these pieces were used as a means to fasten clothing together. Some were traded for goods and food as currency.

The Pharaohs of Egypt were known for their love of gold and many wore gold all over their body. They would wear gold bracelets, necklaces, pendants, breast plates, arm cuffs, anklets, earrings, and head pieces. Bracelets around the wrists and neck were believed to offer protection and as a show of status, power, and wealth. Egyptians lived rather short lives, generally only 30-40 years and jewelry was a large part of preparation for their death. They believed the more jewelry and gold you were buried with, the better prepared you would be for a prosperous afterlife. Jewelry also signified to the Gods the status of the wearer so that their position would be known into the afterlife.

During the middle ages, men wore rings, necklaces and even adorned their swords, knives, shields, and armor with precious stones. Jewelry became a way of separating the upper classes from the serfs. Some also believed that some stones and jewels held mystical powers and were wielded by seers and magicians. Napoleon also influenced men’s jewelry with the more outrageous and flashy jewelry quickly became a popular accent to men’s attire. Due to his influence many of the royal families began to have older pieces reset into more ornate settings, sparking the rage of reinventing jewelry in new ways.

So as you see, men’s jewelry has a rich history as a symbol of power, affluence, position, status, and wealth.  McCaskill & Company offers a wide selection of men’s jewelry from David Yurman and Konstantino.
